Explain what the keto diet is in simple terms

A diet high in fat and low in carbohydrates (sugars) that causes the body to break down fat into molecules called ketones. Ketones circulate in the blood and become the main source of energy for many cells in the body. Foods you can eat on the keto diet include fish and seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and zucchini, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products, olive oil and other oils, and high-cocoa chocolate.

Explain what the keto diet is in simple terms

Imagine your body is a car. Normally, it runs on sugar (glucose) from carbs, like bread or pasta. The keto diet is like switching your car to burn fat for fuel instead.

Here's how it works:

  • You eat very few carbs (breads, sweets, fruits).
  • You eat a lot of fat (meat, fish, nuts, cheese).
  • With fewer carbs, your body runs out of sugar for fuel.
  • To adapt, your body starts burning fat for energy. This is called ketosis.

Burning fat can lead to weight loss and other health benefits. But it's a big change for your body, so it's important to talk to a doctor before starting a keto diet.

The macronutrient distribution of a keto diet typically ranges from: 55% to 60% fat, 30% to 35% protein, and 5% to 10% carbohydrates.

The keto diet has been studied as a potential treatment for various conditions, including:
  • Weight loss
  • Improving mental clarity
  • Boosting energy levels
  • Some types of epilepsy
  • Some types of cancer
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Headache
  • Neurotrauma
  • Pain
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Sleep disorders

The diet severely restricts all forms of carbohydrates, which means that entire food groups such as dairy, fruits, grains, and vegetables must be limited or possibly avoided completely. However, a well-formulated ketogenic diet may include limited amounts of certain fruits such as berries, as well as non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli. Eggs can also be ideal for keto because each large egg contains less than 1 gram of carbs and about 6 grams of protein.

Why is it called a keto diet?

Russell Morse Wilder, at the Mayo Clinic, built on this research and coined the term "ketogenic diet" to describe a diet that produced a high level of ketone bodies in the blood (ketonemia) through an excess of fat and lack of carbohydrate.

What foods are in a keto diet?
Foods you can eat on the keto diet include fish and seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and zucchini, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products, olive oil and other oils, and high-cocoa chocolate.

What are the benefits of a keto diet?
There is evidence to suggest that a KD can help with weight loss, visceral adiposity, and appetite control. The evidence also suggests that eating a high-fat diet improves lipid profiles by lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL), increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and lowering triglycerides (TG).
