Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma (TMKOC) has been one of the most talked about shows from Indian television. Munmun Dutta and Raj Anadkat, who portrayed Babita Iyer and Tipendra Jethalal Gada aka Tapu, respectively, on the show were rumoured to be dating. While Munmun initially slammed the reports on social media and called them ‘cooked up stories’, as per a report by News18, the duo got engaged in a private ceremony recently.
Speaking to ETimes, Munmun labeled the news as “ridiculous, fake, and ludicrous.” She emphasized that the rumor was entirely concocted and expressed her reluctance to invest further energy in this “false narrative.”
The TMKOC co-stars exchanged rings in the presence of their families at a close-knit ceremony in Vadodara (Gujarat), as per the portal. A source told News18, “The engagement took place just a few days back. The two apparently exchanged rings in Vadodara (Gujarat). Munmun and Raj’s families have accepted their relationship and they were also present at the ceremony.” It further stated, “They have been dating ever since Raj joined Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. It was very evident. Everyone on the sets knew about it. In fact, some people were certain that Munmun and Raj would get married eventually. Therefore, it is not shocking that they are engaged now.”
Raj also addressed the reports and posted a statement on his Instagram stories, stating, “Hello Everyone, Just to clear things up, the news you’ve been seeing on social media is false and baseless. Team Raj Anadkat.”
Munmun and Raj had given their individual reactions on Instagram, when their dating rumours surfaced in 2021. Raj took to his handle and wrote, “To everyone, who has been constantly writing about me, THINK of the repercussions that can happen in my life because of your ‘COOKED UP’ (false) stories and that too about my life without my consent. All the creative people out there please channelise your creativity somewhere else it will be helpful to you. May God bless them with good sense.” Munmun also hit back at trolls who commented on her personal life. Her Instagram post read as, “13 years of entertaining people and it didn't take 13 minutes for anyone of you to rip my dignity apart. So next time someone is clinically depressed or driven to take their own lives, pause and think whether it was YOUR WORDS that drove that person to the edge or not. Today, I am ashamed of calling myself a daughter of India.”
The widely circulated report throughout the day suggested that Munmum and Raj had been in a relationship for several years. When similar rumors emerged in 2021, both Munmum and Raj refuted them through their social media posts.
In response to the situation, Raj expressed his frustration, stating, “To everyone who has been constantly writing about me, THINK of the repercussions that can happen in my life because of your ‘COOKED UP’ (false) stories about my life without my consent. All the creative people out there, please channelize your creativity somewhere else; it will be helpful to you. May God bless them with good sense.”
Munmum perceived this as an attack on her dignity and wrote, “To the general public, I had far better expectations from you. But the filth that you have showered in the comment section, even from the so-called ‘Literate’ ones, proves how regressive society we are. Women are constantly AGE SHAMED, SLUT SHAMED, MOM SHAMED, at the cost of your humor. Whether your humor drives someone to the edge of a mental breakdown or not is never your concern. Thirteen years of entertaining people, and it didn’t take thirteen minutes for any of you to RIP MY DIGNITY APART.”
Raj, known for portraying Tappu (Jethalal’s son) on the show, left the television series in 2022.
